What Is Friction In Science

Have you ever realised that you can slide easily over ice or on a wet- road? On the other hand, it is difficult to walk in a desert field or on a beach? Why it happens?

Why the tyres of your bicycle or shoes have special treads and grooves on their surfaces?

The not so obvious answer to all these questions lies in a very simple science concept named friction.

...

What Is Friction?

Friction is a type of force that keeps objects in place or slows them down.

Friction is a special kind of force. But you may ask what's a force?

Forces are pushes or pulls that can change the motion or movement of objects. If you push or pull a box of apples across the floor, you would be using force to move the box. But do you know that there are other invisible forces also that affect the movement of that box besides your own pushes or pulls.

Let's say you're trying to push that box from one end of your bedroom to the other end. As you push it, the box will move, but there's also a force acting in the opposite direction of your push. This force, called friction. It tries to stop the box from moving when you stop pushing it.

To learn more about the friction, please spend some time on this video lesson. This explores friction in greater detail and gives lots of examples of friction in action.
